The Theme Of Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird And The Spokane Reservation

It is human nature for people to strive to feel a sense of connection with others by joining cliques or altering their personality to match others' which often create many misconceptions about those who are different because they perceive problems differently or they have their own style. The two novels incorporate the theme of family to display their impression of the action of interacting with those who are not kin to them. Scout and Junior's narration of their experiences during their adolescence displays the coming of age and how little they are taught about being a good person through the education system. Their encounters with racism from being a victim or a bystander gives context towards how unfriendly people are around them. Harper …show more content…
There were many cases in which the word "nigger-lover" was used by a person in Maycomb and due to the fact that Maycomb is racially tense, the term is used when a white person thinks "somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves," it becomes a form of racism against Negroes since it brings up the idea that they are disliked by white people (Lee, 144). Just as Maycomb uses the term "nigger-lover," Junior has experienced racism by being threatened that if he and Penelope "make charcoal babies," her father would "kick her out of [his] house" (Alexie, 109). Junior is an Indian, and being told that he would have babies who are charcoal coloured is racist since it expresses the disapproval of Penelope's relationship because of Junior's skin colour. Correspondingly, Scout's father has experienced many racial remarks because he had decided to work as a lawyer for a black man, Tom Robinson. His willingness to defend the innocent man caused an uproar amongst the white people of Maycomb as they claim that he is going "against his raising…" and how he is "no better than the niggers and trash he works for" (Lee, 135). As his fellow white neighbours criticize his work with Negroes by using the term "nigger" and "trash, it expresses how they see themselves on a higher level than Atticus and Negroes. They make it clear that it is as if Negroes are a completely separate race than them just because they happen to be black. In addition, the Indians on the Spokane reservation experience the same treatment. They feel alienated by white people as they would visit the reservation and state that they "loved Indian people" to the point that "many white strangers show up on Indian reservations…[to tell them] how much they love them"

Even though Cal is African American, Scout and Jem treat her with respect, as does their father. They do not conform to the norms of their society. They do not refer to African Americans as Negroes or boy, but rather by their name. While in Maycomb, people go around calling African Americans awful names; Atticus teaches the kids that this is wrong, and they should never call African Americans anything other than their names. He also tells the children: “‘You’ll see white men cheat black men everyday of your life, but let me tell you one thing and don’t you forget it- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash '” (252).…

This shows that children, despite their relative ignorance of the world, can come to idealized views of the world that are oftentimes more accurate and better for society as a whole. This is perhaps due to the fact that they are not subjected to racist assumptions rampant in society when they are older. Regardless, Scout adopts an unorthodox view of society, and Lee conveys to the reader that age does not matter when explaining the world. Jem acknowledges Scout’s…

Racism stands for more than one thing. In this case Harper Lee expresses that the theme in “ To Kill A MocKingbird” is you should never judge or mistreat someone because of their skin color. In this book a black man was found guilty for raping a white women when he was clearly innocent, in addition he was also shot 17 times because he was black. In some cases shooting someone 17 times and is unarmed is called overkill. So, therefore, racism is still a big thing in the U.S. today Tom Robinson, an African American man found guilty for a crime he didn’t commit such as raping a white women, whose name is Mayella.…
