In this essay we will be comparing “Killings” and “A Rose for Emily”. Also will be looking at whether I feel empathy or sympathy for either Emily or Matt on the murders they committed. The story “A Rose for Emily” is based around what I can imagine is during reconstruction time. We learn that Emily is a reclusive and aggressive Southern Belle that is distasteful to the new Northern ways that are being brought to the Old South. Not to mention that she might be a tad bit insane, keeping her fathers corps in the home for quite sometime after his death. Homer Barron, a Yankee seemed to cross paths with Emily during his time in redesigning the old southerner towns walkways across the street form where Emily lived in. Homer did not know that crossing …show more content…
In the short story “Killings” we get a view of a double homicide over love and revenge. Frank the son of Matt and Ruthie Fowler was murdered after attempting a relationship with Mary Ann (89). Who had yet to divorce from her husband Richard Strout. Richard did not like the fact that Mary Ann was moving on so quickly. He was not quite ready to give up so, Richard took matters into his own hands killing Frank Fowler. Matt and Ruthie Fowler feared the worst, because Richards family was a prominent wealthy family. They assumed he would get out of the murder charges scot free. This caused Matt to devise a plan to get his revenge for his son's murder. He wants to make it look like Richard skipped bail, while he kills Richard and disposes of his remains so they're never seen …show more content…
This story overall is very hard to understand and feel emotions because the two murders cause the loss of two families sons. An if you look at the story from both Richards point of view and Matt's point of view you get two completely different viewpoints. I can share a sense of empathy for Richard because I can imagine that it would be very frustrating to watch your wife run off with another man and not even be divorced yet. But also you cannot let your emotions get so bad that you kill the guy, even though in my opinion what Frank and Mary Ann where doing was wrong. She should have divorced Richard before starting a relationship with someone new, instead she didn't and it caused emotions to run high which lead to Frank's murder. I can share sympathy with Frank's dad Matt, because I can only begin to wonder what it would be like to lose a
