Compare And Contrast Empire And Roman Empire

One of the main similarities between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire was how they both seemed to rise and fall. Although the two did fall for different reasons, they still both came to an end. The Roman Republic fell due to the unstable government, while the Roman Empire ended due to the rise of Christianity and the inability to establish a working political system(p. 148). Another similarities of the two time periods included how the two thought about slavery. During the late Roman Republic, having many slaves was a sign of a prestigiousness. This continued into the rule of the Empire until the slave uprising in Sicily in second century B.C.E(p. 142). The main difference between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire was how the government was run. The Roman Republic was born after the overthrow of the monarchy in Rome. The republican form of government was established by Roman nobles that wanted to keep their power(p. 128). Due to this, the Republic was much harder to control and was not stable. The first stage was the conquest of Italy, which occurred when they Romans established the Roman Confederation(p.129). The next stage was the conflict with Carthage, which occurred during the Punic Wars. The conflict lead to the destruction of Carthage and the people in the city were sold into slavery(p. 131). The third and final stage was the expansion into western Mediterranean. Two factors lead to the fall of the Roman Republic: multiple powerful leaders fighting for control and the civil war that came from their constant fighting. These powerful people included Crassus, Pompey, and Caesar which formed the First Triumvirate. Eventually Caesar was made dictator until his death.
