Laurie doesn’t change throughout the story. He is rude and disrespectful and he misbehaves at school. To get out of trouble he makes up a boy named Charles who is doing all the things he is doing in so he doesn’t get in trouble with his parents. On the other hand, Roger changes a lot. In the beginning Roger only wants to play therefore, he doesn’t pay much attention to his academics. After a strict substitute teacher fills in for his usual easy-going teacher, Roger becomes more focused and he learns how to spell which was one of the things he didn’t pay much attention to. I think the parents are part of the reason for their kids’ situation. In “Charles”, Laurie’s parents don’t discipline him at all. They are very gullible and fall for Laurie’s trick.
