Charles and Miss Awful

Do you think children need to be taught morals in order to succeed? I do! Kids need to know how to act and be respectful to adults. Today people see kids misbehaving and being disrespectful. Why? Because no one yells at the kid! No one is discipling anyone and in the short stories “Charles” by Shirley Jackson and “Miss Awful” by Arthur Cavanaugh people can see the difference it can make in a kid if you discipline them. In the story “Charles” the setting is at his house. However, Laurie talks mostly about school while at his house. The setting affects this story because if the parents knew how Laurie was in class, then we would never have this problem. I would describe Laurie as rude and carefree. When he gets home he throws all his stuff on the ground, and when it’s dinner time he rocks is chair. Laurie’s main problem is him being disruptive in class and tricks his parents into thinking someone else is causing all the trouble. Laurie is a static character because the problem never gets solved and he never learns his lesson. His parents and teacher play a big role on how he acts in school. His parents never discipline him when he does bad

The setting doesn’t affect the story as much as it does in “Charles” because Roger wasn’t hiding anything from his parents. Roger is a dynamic character because he went from fooling around all the time to knowing when to be serious. The teachers play a huge role in the story because all the first teacher did was fool around, while the other teacher meant business. This affects Roger because now he thinks it’s okay to fool around in school, while really it’s not. The stricter teacher was really the one that made him a dynamic character because she taught him to calm down in school. Roger also learned how to spell correctly. The theme of the story is knowing the time and place to fool around and be serious can really benefit

Foreshadowing in “Charles” convince us that Laurie is in fact Charles. For example, Laurie takes delight in saying a curse word to his father. On page (14) Laurie’s mom explains,”his father bent his head down and Laurie whispered joyfully”. Laurie fabricates Charles to cause commotion in kindergarten and made a little girl bleed with the seesaw at recess. Everyday Laurie comes home from school and says that a boy at school hit the teacher and was being fresh, when the parents asked “what's the boy's name” Laurie took a moment to think making up Charles to not get in trouble for causing disruption in class.…

In the short story “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, the plot relies on the ignorance of the reader that Laurie is Charles until the end of the story. A critic states that it is too easy to realize Laurie is Charles, and that you would have to be as trusting as the parents to not realize. In the story, a reader would be persuaded to not see that in reality Charles is Laurie, but is made simple to see who Charles really is by the facts stated in the story, such as the aggravation shown towards Laurie’s younger sister by spilling her milk, and the disrespect to the family when he slams open the door and yells, “Isn’t anyone here?” Laurie also shows constant and consistent argumentation towards his father with rude and imposing comments, such as when…

The setting of Laurie’s house is used in many ways to create a platform for most of the story to take place.…

To understand how and why our identities form, it is imperative to note the roots of a person’s existence. Identity is not concrete when a child is born; it is the accumulation of events, both favorable or traumatic, that heavily shape a person. In this case, the person of interest is Holden. From the start of the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden assumes the role of a misanthropic narrator who criticizes his peers and superiors as “phony.” However, his evident distrust towards the human race and the world stems from his unfortunate childhood and his surrounding environment.…
