As the audience see Commissioner Gordon’s face half in shadow, suggests that he is hiding something from both the audience and the Joker. In contrast, the Joker’s face is fully seen, but altered in the dim lamp light, the light setting technique has been creating a rather harrowing image; this type of contrast demonstrates that the Joker is hiding his true self. The full ceiling of fluorescent lights is lit when Batman enters, allowing the audience to see his presence. This setting also allows the audience to see the action as well as small details within the scene. For example, the audience could easily see the Joker’s facial expressions and Batman suddenly change his mood. By using contrast between the full lighting and the office while still remains in lamplight throughout; this notices the audience that the people within this office are left in the dark as to what is really going on within the interrogation

In the movie, the director focuses on lighting to portray the mood to the audience. The lighting would appear dim when times were bad, and brighter when good things were happening. For example, when Andy first arrives to the prison it is a very dim day, no sun was visible. As he gets off the bus he appears timid, Red says, “a stiff breeze could blow him over.”…
