Abraham always made wise choices and seemed to learn more from his mistakes. He faced difficulties with moral strength and being able to sacrifice his own son and obey God. Jacob too, had to pursue a moral life after he thought that his favorite son Joseph was killed. Jacob’s whole personality was changed when he thought Joseph had been killed. This might have been God's way of breaking Jacob’s arrogant nature. It wasn’t until Joseph, who became the Egyptian Pharaoh’s chief lieutenant, demanded from his brothers who had traveled to Egypt from Canaan because there was famine in their country that they must bring Jacob to the palace. A major difference between Abraham and Jacob was that Abraham, once he acquired his wealth, shared his prosperity with friends and strangers. He was known for his welcoming nature. Jacob, was always running away. First from Esau his older brother, and then from other enemies.
Another difference between the two patriarchs was that Abram left his family and was led to a place shown to him by God. Jacob, other than his split with his brother, surrounded himself with family and was seldom uprooted. In my opinion, I think that Abraham was a man in pursuit of peace even if that meant arguing with God as he did about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
