In Faulkner’s story, Emily’s family has always been the face of the town, we can see this when the town people say, “Alive, Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town. . .” (Faulkner, a Rose from Emily) The town does not see her as a person, but more as an object and now that her father passed away she is seen as the town’s pity. Being that the play is set in the late 1800s, most people back in the south were farmers that live in small towns, meaning that most, if not all were not rich, but Miss Emily was sure the exception. She came from a wealthy family that had the biggest house in town. This meant that she had to keep her reputation, and her appearance, silky white so that gossip and speculations from the town did not end in her ears. With this in mind, we can get a clear view of why she killed Barron Homer. In, the other hand, we can also say that Jane was in the same boat of social expectations during at the time period. Miss Emily thoughts revolve around the idea of finding her role in the community as wife of a gentleman. Seeing as she, could not see this, she killed Homer and every day she would as to say cuddle with him to feel “Closure”. This led her to live in another reality, along with Jane. Jane’s chronicle could be describe as an inner path to find herself, because after all in the end she becomes a whole new different person as she “walks over” her husband. She ended up in a different reality because she did not have any social life apart from her so dear called “Diary”. We could say that in the end she did not really free herself, because she was still trap in her own reality. Therefore, when we compare both characters we can say that all they need was some social life to stay sane.
In the final analysis, both stories by Gilman and Faulkner, gives the reader a better understanding of how of two women can be seen in the same situation of oppression and how each one of them comprehend and adapt to the situation according to their specific environment. Miss Emily was always on a leash tide to society’s expectations and that is was what made her commit the crimes that she did. While Jane in the same situation, tried her best to be the best wife for her husband, but in the end she finally rebels and went against
