The Florida metropolis that was evaluated and studied is located in the Florida Treasure Coast, Martin County which includes the smaller communities of Jensen Beach, Stuart, Palm City, Jupiter Island, Seawalls Point, Ocean Breeze, Indiantown, North River Shores, Rio, Port Salerno, Port Maraca, and Hobe Sound. Martin county is nestled between Palm Beach county and St. Lucie County and offers 753 square miles of land, 209 square miles of which is water provided by either the St. Lucie River and Inlet. In the year 2010 the census of Martin county reached a total population of 146,318 residents (Gray, "Martin County Community Health Assessment Report”). The population has steadily been increasing and is forecasted to grow exponentially in the next few years. The increased population can be attributed to the cost effective living and abundant housing availability. Martin county is known for being a retirement community as well as offering the opportunity for new or young families to find their dream home in the Sailfish Capital of the world. “In 2009, 55% of Martin County’s population was 45 years old and older, as compared to 43% in Florida. Fourteen percent of Martin County’s 2009 population was younger than 15 years of age. The median age in Martin County increased slightly from 47.3 in 2000 to 48.2 in 2009. The 45 to 64 year old population accounts for the greatest proportion among Whites (30.3%), the 25 to 44 year old African American population accounts for the greatest proportion (27.1%), among Hispanics/Latinos, the 25 to 44 year old population accounts for the greatest proportion (31.9%), and Asians accounted for only 1.2% of Martin County’s population in 2009”(Gray, "Martin County Community Health Assessment Report”).
