Community Food Pantry Mission Statement

When I was in middle school I was part of a church group called Pathfinders; and being a part meant that every holiday the group would do volunteer work for the community. Around thanksgiving we would collect food, walking door to door, and later give it to a local food kitchen. And around Christmas time there would be a toy collection for families in need. Having this past experience under my belt, it motivated me to volunteer my time with other students from Kean at the local food pantry. Another reason why I chose this volunteer work was because the other options did stick out to me as so impactful as this one. The location we went is called Community Food Bank of New Jersey, this food bank distributes all their items to emergency food banks, soup kitchen, senior feeding programs, shelters, and after school programs around New Jersey. It was surprisingly closer than I thought which made me excited that I could possibly go back if it was well. The mission statement of the Community Food Bank taken from their website is, “ to …show more content…
For example if we got drinks that were other than water they would be put in the beverages bin. Some other categories would be cans, coffee, water, boxed food, and cans. My group was very excited to be there, as myself, and we worked very hard to do as much as we could in the two hours that we were working. Working with the community was a memorable new experience because it had people from so many backgrounds, rich or poor, all working together for a good cause. My group was able to finish all the large bins given to us, while working at an intense speed and laughing & smiling. I noticed how other groups across the building weren't that motivated and looked like it was the last place they wanted to be on a saturday morning. It made me thankful that a was with people who wanted to be there just as much as I

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

My experience at the Houston Food Bank was rewarding, fun, and enlightening. It was rewarding knowing that I was filling bags of rice to help those in need. At one point, I went outside and saw a long line of vehicles waiting to get food, and that, made volunteering worth it. It was an enlightening experience because I have always thought the Houston Food Bank was for homeless people, but it is not. It is for working people who have a hard time buying groceries after paying their bills.…

I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

In manifold years, the African American community has suffered harshly from institutional racism. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally, economically, and politically have been the main factors that our community lacks for "success” due from oppression. Philanthropy is a way for our Black Leaders to restore the lack of resources such as meals, housing, educational opportunities, and guidance in the communities.…
