The form of a conversation is dynamic to the way in which participants work through their differences. The Public Conversations Project (PCP) recommends that members follow a shared set of principles that include genuine listening, respectful communication, mutual understanding, and self-reflection. The PCP suggest individuals follow particular guidelines while conversing within a community. Each individual within the group fulfilled the recommended guidelines: we related to one another as persons, spoke from personal experiences and told personal stories, reflected on what was most important to each of us, reflected on shades of gray as well as preformed positions, and our conversation was carefully structured to build trust and manage face. In addition, to the PCP guidelines each person within the group genuinely listened, communicated in a respectful manner, had a mutual understanding, and self-reflected. Moreover, as a group we managed to reframe the episode using collaborative learning. Instead of presenting a face-threatening frame we focused on building face while learning and collaborating creatively. We were able to create a safe environment and encourage

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

For me the activity of working as a group especially with other individuals who I have not worked with or talked to before was a good learning experience that had both positive and negative outcomes using Driscoll’s model of reflection as a frame work to elaborate on how I interpreted what happened, what impact the situation had on me and what I will do in the future if presented with a similar situation (Driscoll and Teh, 2001). We were required to do a 10 minute presentation for a health promotion project that we developed. I decided to work with other individuals who I didn’t know and have not worked with before as I believed I would be more productive and respectful if I worked with people I didn’t know very well. For the first tutorial…

What is a discourse community? A discourse community is a group composed of people that come together or are connected by similarities, and these shared characteristics can be endless, things such as language, religion, and skin color are only the tip of the iceberg. While the possibilities may be endless most people think that they’re only part of one or two, which is far from true because individuals from all over the world come together and relate over the most miniscule things. I myself am part of several different communities that pertain to my tastes in music, style, and age. Although the list for me could be endless, two that affect me the most is being in the millennial community and being part of the young adults all around the world that are in college or out of high school.…

Through participation in a service that directly impacts the Latino community, I learned about Latino culture beyond a classroom setting. I provided my service at the Latin American Festival in Longs Park, Lancaster, PA on October 10, 2015. There were several activities that the coordinator had the group of volunteers do, such as help with children’s activities, parking duty, stage crew, information booth, program distribution, and the workshops. The activities that I had to do were to direct the performers to their dressing rooms and make sure no one enters the room as the performers get ready. Since the dressing rooms were right next to the bathrooms, I had to direct the public as to which doors were for the bathrooms to avoid confusion.…

The term "Spilling" was new to me, and I've never thought about it like that before. It just seems like the way to work through things would be to talk about them however, I do understand that there is an appropriate way, time, and place to do that. And, that spilling in group among others with major problems or establishing new relationship on that basis is not health for the patient or others.…
