Community Belonging

“A person without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” - Marcus Garvey) Communities thrive off of traditions and ideas that create a sense of unity in an environment. In order to feel a sense of belonging, you must first understand where you are, who you are, and how you go to be there. All over the world you will see a never-ending amount of rituals, and social norms. Learning how to participate in a community starts with interpreting language. However, in order to live, you must understand that there is also a time that you will leave the earth. Within a community, it is critical to have confidence within yourself. Being able to walk with your head up, and not need constant reminders on how to present yourself will help you to lead a much happier life. To connect with others, you should find something that can connect you to the people around you. Having a constant group of people who are there for you will give you a sense of belonging that will remind you that you are important. Perception to the little things around you can help you to see beauty in the not-so-pretty things. “I must start with dirt. It must become stars. Sometimes all I see is dirt, and the dance fails. That night it was stars.”(Tawny Grammar, 52) Although, sometimes the ugly things you see in life are just ugly. Fear is an emotion that can make you feel apprehensive, and scared for the future. However, it is imperative that you have moments in your lifetime that scare you, so that you know how to overcome the obstacles that present themselves.
