Batista’s term began on a different path than where it ended. In the beginning, Batista assisted and organized army coups to overthrow the government. Batista won these battle and controlled the country democratically for several years. Ultimately in 1940 Batista assumed the role of President. As Batista’s second term continued, it became apparent that any positive hopes for an everlasting democracy in Cuba lacked. Batista, becoming more brutal and dictatorial than ever before started transforming Cuba. Batista “manipulated presidential elections, cracked down on newspapers, outlawed strikes, and embezzled money from the state” (Berlatsky para 2). There became no doubt in the mind of Cuban residents that their ruler began adopting a dictatorial style. In 1959, it would continue. Castro’s recent death accelerated the repair of Cuba’s international ties and will affect Cuba in a positive way with the deceleration of its Communist tendencies. Since the loss of Fidel Castro, the United States and Cuba engaged in several interactions. JetBlue airlines, along with several others carriers flew their first commercial flight to Cuba in over fifty years. The ramification of this recent development remains to be seen but are viewed as a positive step. “The new flights are part of the Obama's administration’s re-establishing ties with Cuba, but their future could hit turbulence depending on President-elect Donald Trump's policies” (Berlatsky para 6). U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro met together for the first time in half a decade to discuss normalization and the two governments international relationship. Obama did not want to meet with former president Fidel Castro because at the presidency had already been handed down to his brother Raúl Castro. With extreme disdain, Fidel Castro preached "We do not need the empire to give us anything" (McManus para 1). Events like these are what's going to make Cuba better off without Fidel Castro and Communism. His negativity towards other countries was unnecessary and caused the loss of several allies.
