Interviewee A: Her mom generally makes the decisions in the family. Her biological parents are divorced, and her step dad does not make the decisions for her and her brother. Her mom is a very influential person in her life.
Interviewee B: It is a patriarchal society so the dad makes most of the decisions in the family.
My response: My mom and my dad make the decisions in my family. It is not one more than the other. They make sure to make any important decisions a joint effort, and seeing them work so well together made me really want to have that in a relationship as well. Communication norms
Is it more common to give someone direct eye contact when looking at them or indirect eye contact?
Interviewee A: It is common for someone to look directly for a little bit, then look around at the areas behind the person they are talking to because it is uncomfortable to stare into someone’s eyes for that long. It is important to show the other person that you are paying attention to what they have to say, but it is also not uncommon for people to talk over each other.
Interviewee B: It is more common to give direct eye contact to show that you are invested in the conversation.
My response: It is common to keep eye contact with the person that you are talking to. It would look strange if you were to look over the shoulder of the person that you were talking to or look down at the ground. It is atypical for our culture, because when someone is not making eye contact with you, it is hard to tell if you have their complete attention. If someone calls me a swear word, I will be highly offended because they are not respecting me. When someone flicks me off with their middle finger, I also find that offensive because in our culture that means that someone is telling you that they do not like you.
Food preferences
What are some common food dishes in your culture?
Interviewee A: A lot of typical foods in her culture have some type of rice, fish, and seafood. She said that her family makes a dessert called a guava duff, which is a type of pastry made with guava with alcoholic sauce on top. For breakfast it is common to have grits and she preferred the yellow grits over the white grits. She also said that her and her friends would get conch and fries.
Interviewee B: Most dishes contain some sort of fish, vegetable, or stew. They cook a lot of roast pork and other roast meats. They also cook the whole fish (scales, eyes, and all).
My response: A lot of food dishes in my culture have some sort of meat and potatoes. My dad is a very good cook and likes to make mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, pork roasts, and many other foods similar. In Minnesota culture, hot dishes or casseroles are very common to find on family dinner tables. In America fast food is also becoming a greater aspect of the diets of many
