The resistances take on different forms and different beliefs. In The Crawlers by Philip K. Dick, the individuals of the town are rejecting the lives of their children due to the main reason that they do not look like humans. Although a character describes the crawlers as “soft, shelless, and [look] harmless,” many still plan remove them from civilization to protect themselves (Dick 3). In Judith Merril’s short story Survival Ship, the crew of the ship Survival resist giving the public knowledge of the inequality of genders on board; the majority and captain are female. They resist the pressures of the public and ensured that there “were only two things [they] didn’t know, and couldn’t find out: the real names of the mysterious Twenty and Four, and the reason why those names were kept secret” (Merril 2-3). Resistance of belief is present in The Smile by Ray Bradbury when the main character Tom, a young boy, resists the unusual societal rules, such as spitting on the Mona Lisa, because he admires its beautiful. And in Now Let Us Sleep by Avram Davidson, Harper opposed the killing and domestication of the Primitives that lived on a different planet because the killing served no purpose. By resisting the unfamiliarities that may pose threats to the human race, survival can thus be maintained. In The Crawlers, the humans rejected their babies because they were different, therefore ensuring the similarities of the future. The members in this town were adamant on removing and even killing the crawlers due to their “parody of a human face” (Dick 3). Many of the people did not even want them anywhere around, one woman saying: “Keep checking. Don’t let any stay where we have to look at them” (6). In Now Let Us Sleep, the human race killed the primitives for easy access from one planet to the next and to “let off steam” from a long journey as no one ever cared about what happened to the planet (Davidson 3). Eventually Dr. Hill started using the natives of the planet to experiment with viral infections and treatments, which would ultimately help the humans and future generations to ward off deadly diseases. Harper’s resistance to harming the Primitives and aiding in the survival of their group did not succeed, but the survival of the human race was rewarded according to Dr. Hill’s actions. By resisting the public’s opinions and pressure to know the people on the ship, survival on Earth and on their destination were ensured in Survival Ship. The crew members follow the rule that “survival of the race is the first duty of every ethical man and woman” and that
