What are archetypes? Archetypes are the recurring themes in all stories. Archetypes can be found in almost any part of a story, or any story in general. You can find situational archetypes, character archetypes, and symbolic archetypes in any story, and archetypes will always follow the same cycle. The first stage of archetypes is the golden age. The golden age is the stage of innocence. It symbolizes the beginning, and purity. The golden age is often compared with things like spring, Eden, innocence, rebirth, and creation. Some people may even say that we are constantly trying to get back to the golden age. The next phase of the cycle is the God teacher. One example of one of these character archetypes is the hunting group companions. In this film Josh and Billy are hunting group companions. In this movie Billy, and Josh work together against many problems in order to try to turn Josh back into a kid again. They are loyal friends and they work together against problems so that they can just be friends like they used to be, before Josh was changed. Another example of a character archetype is the mentor. In the movie Billy is Josh’s mentor when he first is changed into a grown up. He helps Josh set up a temporary new life for Josh. Billy also helps Josh with things like filling out his job application, getting Josh a hotel room, and picking out his new apartment. Billy helps Josh adjust to his temporary new life, and try to get his old one back. Another example of a character archetype is the outcast. In the beginning Josh is an outsider at his job. The people at his job make fun of him, and talk about him behind his back. None of his co-workers like him because they’re jealous of him. They also try to dig up information about him, and try to find out where he came from. The way Josh’s co-workers treat him makes him an outcast. In the movie Big there are many character
