Commitment to Reflective Practice: In Word their Way it stated that students placed in the Emergent Late group should receive a zero on the spelling inventory. When grouping the student’s I wanted to make sure that each student had a firm grasp of understanding and that there was no holes in the student’s understanding. Spelling is an important tool that student use and as a teacher, I do not want my students to have a weak understanding of phonemes. Frustration can cause a lot of students to not feel motivated to learn and the beginning of first grade is too early to make students feel frustrated. As I grouped students I wanted to make sure students would be in groups that would allow students to be challenged, but not be frustrated. Challenged …show more content…
“There are six fundamental components that constitute a comprehensive “diet” for early literacy learning and instruction(Invernizzi, 2002): 1. Oral language, concepts, and vocabulary 2. Phonological awareness 3. Alphabet knowledge (PA) 4. Letter-sound knowledge 5. Concepts about print(CAP) 6. Concept of word in text(COW-T)”(Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, & Johnston, 1996, 100).When creating the lesson I considered these six different components and tried to make them part of my lesson. These six components also will be covered throughout the day during other lessons. The first lesson focuses on a picture sort. The students look at 20 pictures and sort the pictures based on the beginning consonant sounds. This lesson focuses on concepts and sorting the pictures based on the beginning sound, which relates to Oral language, concepts and vocabulary. The second lesson connects phonological awareness and causes the students to sound out the word, but focuses on the initial sound. The third lesson in the week has students read a book and do a word sort, which connects to concepts about print. The fourth lesson has the students do a word sort and connects beginning word sounds with letter sounds. This connects to letter-sound knowledge. The lessons throughout the week were specifically chosen and arranged so student saw sounds and words in a variety of different ways. By the end of the week students should have a deeper grasp of beginning consonant

The two assessments that measure early literacy skills for students in grades K-2 are Early Literacy Skills Assessment (ELSA) by High/Scope and the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA). The ELSA evaluates his or her understanding, “phonological awareness, the alphabet principle, and concepts (DeBruin-Parecki, 2005).” This process consists of three separate forms that are to be completed by the assessor throughout several evaluation activities. The first form is completed during a collaborative reading session with the student; second form is to be filled in after the completion of each session conducted and the third form which is a summary of the second form is to be finalized after it is completely filled in. Although it is not taught directly, phonological and phonemic knowledge continues to be applied in the later year levels. As these are skills that are crucial to decoding words and reading (Flint et al, 2017), I determined it was important to include these in my portfolio. I have tried to select resources and activities relating to phonological awareness that students can use on their own or in small groups as early finisher activities or as part of a lesson to support students across a range of year levels. Students of all ages may struggle with reading due to difficulties cracking the code (Latham, 2014). One resource I have categorised as phonological awareness is Reading Eggs.…

The Literacy Narrative was sort of a trial and error project. I wrote the essay the best way I knew how and hoped for the best grade. I did though get to tackle a more creative aspect of my writing that needed much working on. Since this essay was based on our own experiences, it allowed me to be as creative as I would like rather than being confined to the requirements that something like a research paper would have. Despite this, I still realized that my Literacy Narrative was not my strongest paper.…

After reviewing the reading rockets website, I found that the 5 components of beginning English reading are phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, including oral reading skills and reading comprehension strategies. Beth Antunez, author of English Language Learners and the Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction, says using these 5 components teachers can really reach their students who struggle with English reading development. The first component of the 5 is phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes in spoken words says author Beth Antunez. One activity that I can incorporate in my classroom to teach phonemic awareness is by using word family charts.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. Literacy has now been a national focus and is receiving the attention that is requiring for students to become successful.…
