Seth and Wells (2011) describe a reliever airport as, “general aviation-type airports that provide relief to congested major airports” (pg. 17). Reliever airports are located in areas close to commercial service airports, have at least 100 planes based from them, handle at least 25,000 itinerant operations, and exist for a variety of reasons. A primary reason is to relieve congestion at the larger airport. These types of airports provide facilities similar to a commercial services airport, and general aviation is encouraged to use the reliever airport. While general aviation airports do not transfer the majority of passengers from point to point, GA airports do host a large number of aviation activity. Flight schools, agricultural related air services, emergency flights, and more are usually located at general aviation airports. These airports are especially suited/located to provide these services from airfields that are not as congested as commercial services
