Commentary On The Documentary 'Blackfish'

Decent Essays
In the documentary Blackfish directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite It goes through and explains the risks of Sea World told by previous employees and those who have experienced the wonderful world of water. Unfortunately it’s not so wonderful. She interviews a man who participated in the capturing of the orcas. He describes how he knew it was wrong what they were doing and regrets it now. This demonstrates how Sea World is wrongfully running which is a strong point of the documentary. She also sits down with 5 of the trainers to talk about their experiences at sea world. Although many of them are thankful that they had the chance to work with these animals they are mortified by the events that have happened. They explain that they were not made

The entire film is relies on false authority. The audience has no one to believe but the trainers used in the film, most of which have not worked for SeaWorld in over 20 years. The experts the movie claims to use could be actors as far as the audience knows, and none of them help strengthen the central argument. Do any of these people know enough about whales in captivity to educate the audience? The film opens up with shots of a trainer in the water surrounded by whales.…

Which then lead to the incident. In an article, i read the abstract just and it talked about how it wasn’t until t5his incident trainers swam and trained with the whales ( Benjamin Wallace, Seaworld Breached). While doing some research I found an article about Seaworld and what happens to killer whales there, that usually won’t happen. On average, an Orca’s life span is usually 30-50 years, while in captivity 15 years( 8 Reasons Orcas Don’t Belong at Seaworld, PETA). Like in the documentary it is talked about the collapsed dorsal fin, how that just a little indicator the it isn’t a healthy environment( Blackfish, killer whale expert scientist).…

An article counteracting the renowned film, Blackfish, a documentary about the inhumane treatment and situation of orcas in captivity, was released by Seaworld Cares. Seaworld Cares is a foundation for animals supported by Seaworld. The article was the company’s retort against the film’s “ultimately false and misleading points”. The main purpose of the article is to persuade the reader, while providing some information to support their points. They wish to urge the reader to believe that not everything in the film, Blackfish, was true nor trustworthy.…

This cinematic distortion of facts casts SeaWorld in an incriminating light. One example is the very opening scene of the film, a construction of various clips of killer whales and trainers, with inauspicious music and an audio clip of a 911 call made regarding Dawn Brancheau’s death. This is formulated with the intent to mislead the audience into believing that Dawn Brancheau was killed during or surrounding a water event, or that she engaged in waterwork with Tilikum, which is not the case. Not only is the footage at the beginning not of Dawn Brancheau, but the opening scene is not even all the same trainer footage. Neither are the clips of Tilikum, nor do they feature an attack or aggressive act of any kind.…

As of December 2012, 138 reported cases of captive orca attacks upon trainers and visiting pedestrians at SeaWorld and other marine mammal parks have been recorded, three of which resulted in death. The number of reported cases of orca attacks upon humans in the wild is zero (Orca Home). PETA, SeaWorld of Hurt, the Orca Project, and various other organizations contend that SeaWorld 's detainment of orcas for the purposes of entertainment is abusive and violates multiple animal rights. The Orca Project has found captivity of these whales leads to whale to whale aggression, social strife, boredom, and various health issues that lead to their premature deaths (The Orca Project). However, SeaWorld maintains that captivity of these whales is not harmful to the…

From here the hunters had to net the babies away from their mothers to capture them. The former diver noticed the whales had more emotions than expected because he saw the other mothers and babies staying around the captured whale. Another example of this is when a baby killer whale was being taken away from its mother at SeaWorld to be shipped to another park. The mother stayed in a corner for days making a call that the trainers have never heard before. Experts were brought in to examine the whale’s call and they diagnosed it as a long ranged call that no one has ever witnessed before.…

SeaWorld has made several online statements about the inaccuracy of Blackfish. The most impressive of these statements was a 32-page document outlining many of Blackfish’s inaccuracies with cited evidence. For example, SeaWorld points out how most of the “SeaWorld trainers” interviewed in the film never worked with Tilikum, and how the film uses outdated information and footage to ignore SeaWorld’s modern facilities and protocol. News outlets still unfairly consider SeaWorld a target anyway, because Blackfish appeals to emotion while SeaWorld fights back with facts. Blackfish in news articles is often framed as if the film’s producers are underdogs stepping up against the soulless corporate entity that is SeaWorld.…

With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…

It is evident that the trainers react to the attacks with shock and fear.
