Dental assistants place an important role in the delivery of dental care. This quarter I learned about basic dental procedures such as composite and amalgam restorations, as well as how to fabricate and cement a temporary crown. I applied this information during our lab class and made a temporary for my typodont. I was good at making a triple tray so we don’t need to make all those three opposing arch impression, bite registration and final impression which made the procedure done efficiently . Also, I placed amalgam restoration on my typodont with amalgam carrier, condenser and other instruments.…

If a tooth becomes too damaged or decayed for fillings or other restoration methods to work, it might require a crown. This is a covering that goes over the entire tooth and used to stabilize the structure of the tooth while also preventing further damage. While Digital Dental Group in Dayton, OH, and other dental offices use to complete this procedure over two or more appointments, new technologies now allow them the possibility of offering patients same day crowns. In the past when patients came to their dentist for dental crowns, they would often have to schedule a primary appointment to have a mold made of their teeth for the custom crown.…

During a dental exam, your dentist or hygienist will also ask about any health problems you have or medications you're taking and discuss how they might affect your oral health. If you have diabetes, for example, you're at increased risk of gum disease. Any medication that contributes to dry mouth can increase your risk of tooth decay. If arthritis interferes with your ability to effectively brush your teeth, your dentist or hygienist might show you how to insert the handle of your toothbrush into a rubber ball for easier use — or recommend a powered or electric toothbrush.…

Through participation within the VCU Dental Pipeline program this summer, my aspects of the dental career focused and became a little more clearer inspiring me to lean my future more into the study of different sciences. From the expanding of my horizons of career choices within the VCU and more in depth into the School of dentistry, it has left me wondering more about if dentistry is just diving into someones mouth looking for a cavity or if there is more science behind it. To be specific there are questions that are left unanswered in my mind like what are the reactions and the perfect environment/circumstances for a tooth to form, grow, operate, and thrive within the mouth. So being apart of the program can greatly benefit my knowledge in…
