Comet Ping Pong Scandal

James Alefantis was just an average restaurant owner. He had some quirky concepts and a politically significant ex-husband, but nothing alarming. That all changed with “Pizzagate,” a political scandal surrounding his pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong. At first glance, Comet Pizza is nothing special. It is described as a “hipster-heavy pizza parlor in the Upper Northwest with rough concrete walls, bathrooms hidden behind secret panels, and table tennis galore” (qtd. in Comet Ping Pong), but Comet Pizza has been through incredible controversy, a controversy that was completely fabricated. Yet, it grew exponentially due to the enabling habits of the American people.
Pizzagate began in the midst of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. In 2016, attorney David Goldberg began to spread an outlandish conspiracy. Goldberg claimed that emails between Hillary Clinton and her aide, Huma Abedin, confirmed that Hillary was running a child sex slavery ring. The theory did not end there,

The Comet Ping Pong controversy is one of many examples of fake news manifesting into real actions with real consequences. In an extreme case, a series of fake news led to politicians enforcing a quarantine, a landlord kicking her tenants out of the house, and a nursing school to force a student to drop out. These consequences came from the story of Kaci Hickox, a nurse who was accused of having Ebola by politicians in New Jersey. This story blew up and rather than check her results more politicians demanded she go on quarantine. Quarantine was not needed, but that did not stop her landlord from attempting to kick her out and her boyfriend’s school from not allowing him to come to school because he lived with her. Actions that are taken because of fake news can cause incredible damage to people's livelihoods which is why organizations are working to fight against it

The future of our nation and our democracy depends upon the next generation of electorates. In the ABC documentary An Uneducated Electorate Promotes Democracy's Demise by John Stossel, Richard Dreyfus discusses how uninformed, apathetic, and uninterested electorates will ultimately lead to the demise of the United States’ form of democracy. Moreover, the fault also lies in current cable shows that misinform the majority of impressionable and easily manipulated electorates. As the foundation of our government lies within the citizens, an incognizant electorate will jeopardize and threaten our democracy. Education plays a part in the foundation of democracy.…

INT 420 Deona Sherrill Paper #1 There are literally thousands of web sites out there that claim to be news sources and many of these web sites are conspiracy sites and/or groups who think they can publish rumors as facts. This can wreak havoc on the internet and in some people’s lives and I think it is highly unethical to publish anything that has not first been proven to be true by finding the basis for their stories on facts and not rumors. I remember one story that flew the rumor mill last May about how the US Military was going to invade Texas or put Texas under Martial Law or at the very least was training our troops on how to put the entire United States under Martial Law. In reality, some of our special op troops were being brought…

In the end, the House Committee on Ethics concluded that he committed a number of violations but couldn’t prove that he was aware of the extent of Gobie’s escort business. There are several more examples of these types of scandals, but only one these politicians had publicly supported the decriminalization of prostitution before their scandal occurred; it was Barney Frank. Barney Frank was a Massachusetts State Representative in 1975 when he introduced legislation that would have officially recognized the “Combat Zone” district of Boston as an adult entertainment district, thereby making it a de facto red-light district with decriminalized prostitution. Barney Frank’s bill ultimately didn’t get passed even though it was at the behest of the Boston Police Commissioner at that…

The Government’s case painted Salerno as the boss of a crime family organization called the Genovese crime family of La Costa Nostra and Cafaro was another, lower leader of the crime family. The Government moved to have the two men detained at arraignment, concluding that they both posed a danger to the community and no conditions of release would protect the safety of the community. In recent years, the outcry of people against genetically modified food, or GM food, has become increasingly prominent in both commercial and governmental practices.
