Event One:
New Year’s Eve at Knights of Columbus
This January I rang in the New Year alongside family and friends at the hall, Knights of Columbus. Every year since I can remember my family spends their New Year’s Eve at this hall, but this year I was able to tag along. This event was probably one of the most exciting and enjoyable ways that I have spent celebrating the New Year. For admission, each guest bought a ticket at a price of fifty dollars. At first, this price seemed steep. However, this ticket included a buffet, open bar, and entertainment all night.
The night started out by entering the hall, giving your ticket for admission, receiving a raffle ticket, and finding your table. As the night began the participants were open to getting a drink or conversing. After roughly an hour the buffet opened (bar closed at this time), and people were ushered to the line by their tables. Being a dessert fanatic I also noticed that the desserts were out as well. After people

The buffet line went smoothly and they did set up a double sided buffet. However, with a crowd of over 100, the line began to back up and people dismissed last did not get to eat until the very end. Food was kept stocked and it was all war, however, participants dismissed last were getting upset. To help calm this situation, the hall`s serving staff could in the future set up multiple buffet tables to help increase the speed of people going through the lines.
One last detail, that as a planner, should be looked at is the conclusion of the event. New Year’ Eve parties are known for participants getting intoxicated. Downtown Grand Rapids has had many issues, as well as many other places. To ensure that the night is safe for all, even for those not attending, participants should be monitored. Most believe that as the event ends, that is where the job ends for the planners. However, one of the most crucial jobs of a planner is after the event has

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Christopher Columbus discovered the new world in his voyages, but by accident. The reason for Columbus’s voyage was to find an alternate trade route to the Spice Islands And at this time the passage required Spain to go through the Mediterranean Sea. The sea, however, was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and required a hefty toll. For this reason, Columbus did “not go eastward by land in the usual manner but by the western way” (Doc 1).…

Celebrating Christopher Columbus for what he did isn’t necessary. We celebrate Columbus day to acknowledge what Christopher did for our country by sailing and discovering new ways to be and act but do we forget what he did to be somewhat successful he killed people and enslaved over a thousand. We should change the holiday to celebrate the success but not celebrate about Christopher Columbus he is what caused fear and native Americans begging for their lives. We should get rid of Columbus Day because what good does it do celebrating someone who raped girls and sold them as sexual slaves. He is the reason many had died from the diseases him and his crew spread killing hundreds of innocent native Americans.…

The problem with Columbus day lies in the name. Named after the Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus, Columbus day carries the implications of oppression, deception, and genocide. However, this is not what Columbus day should be celebrated for. Columbus day should instead represent the connection between the new and old world, and as one of the greatest events in human history. Even if that means a new name.…

In parallel with this annual vacation day for most in the United States, children are also taught about a heroic explorer, who courageously stood up for his belief, that the world was round, rather than flat, by asking many monarchs for the opportunity to prove his belief by finding a shortcut to the Indies, and then proceeded to discover the Americas. Yes, children nationwide are captivated by the story of this brave explorer, Christopher Columbus, who was responsible for finding their continent, and for giving them a day off. It's that time of year again; pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween decorations, and the national recognition of a man responsible for mass murder, pillaging, and enslavement. It's no secret that Christopher Columbus was a horrible man, or that he didn't even "discover the new world", yet every year on October 12, he is recognized for his "accomplishment". It seems as though more and more people are unwilling to celebrate Columbus, even going so far as to put an axe in the head of his statue. While there has been opposition of Columbus Day for many years, there is only a handful of cities that refuse to recognize it.…

Columbus Day is an unnecessary holiday that, for some reason, we still honor today. The holiday is also an affront to the indigenous population. The false sense of patriotism is wrong to memorialize. The whole day is based off of a fabrication of the true events. When children are in elementary school, they are taught that Christopher Columbus was a hero, to shield the truth.…

A main point brought up to defend Columbus day is that it instills a sense of national pride. This is true but as historian William Connell brings up in his article “What Columbus Day Really Means”, Columbus Day was originally created to honor the Native Americans and immigrants. It was meant to be about all the other American history before “discovery” by the Europeans. It seems that today the focus has shifted away from that and Columbus Day is more about Columbus as an individual and his accomplishments. In order to rework this holiday into what it originally was, it is best to take advice Wilma Mankiller and “make sure that Americans have some sort of historical and cultural context for understanding our [Native Americas’] contemporary…

The airplane eventually got filled by people from various cultures, so we started to buckle our seats as assigned by the radio and off we flew to Cairo, Egypt. It was early in the morning, which then I decided to take a tranquil nap. In a few minutes, I rose from the alarms of “delightful” stewardesses and the cries of babies.…

Celebrating Columbus day is a very big debate in the states right now. Did you know only about 23 states actually celebrate Columbus day as a federal holiday? The U.S. should not celebrate Columbus day.…

Dinner parties are a significant part of upper-class Roman society, as it allows them to flaunt their wealth and build beneficial connections and form alliances. However, this social norm has negative connotations, as demonstrated by Martial and Pliny, no matter what perspective it is viewed from. Two poems by Marshall broach the subject of dinner parties, but each from a different view. In Epigram 2.18, the narrator lays out the details of his exasperation and embarrassment about dinner invites that he had been trying to obtain from a wealthier man named Maximus.…

Even the rich seldom made a fire in the evening, but contented themselves with left-overs from their noon dinner, a little bread and cheese, a few olives, 1
and the usual dried figs. As for the poor, they ate plain bread the whole year around, spiced occasionally with a care- fully crushed raw tomato, or a little garlic and oil, or a Spanish pepper with such a devilish bite to it that it is known as a diavolesco.
