In order to fully grasp the concept of the color visual system, one would need to understand the psychobiology and cognitive theories. Psychobiology is used to examine the relationship between the brain and mind. While the cognitive theory emphasizes mental processes involved in numerous actions, such as remembering, solving problems, and thinking. In short, the eye takes in light rays and converts them into electrical and chemical signals that are interpreted by the brain to form physical images. This process requires communication between the eye, a sensory organ, and brain, the core of the central nervous system. Electromagnetic rays, in the form of light, must pass through the cornea, which will focus the rays. This ray will then enter through the pupil and there, the iris determines how much or how little light is necessary in order to see the image properly. The cornea and lens will adjust the length of the image being seen from the back of the eye. Visual reception occurs at the retina where photoreceptor cells, cones and rods, give the image color and shadow. The image is converted into neural impulses. These impulses must be converted into a chemical signal in order to travel through a synaptic gap and finally, transfer through the optic nerve to the brain for processing. The …show more content…
The thalamus, which is a part of the brain that is responsible for relaying important information, and occipital lobe, which responds to visual stimuli and enables an individual to actually see the image, must be fully-functioning. These parts of the brain will enable neurons to go back and forth between the eyes and brain, producing an image. Creating an artificial retina to replace the malfunctioning retina would enable for the use of the color visual system, so long as the thalamus and occipital lobe are
