I come from a world of a small Colombian family in an American life with a vase difference in culture. I have learn how to adjust in both cultures and traveled to other cultures to aid in their community. Even though the cultures have their own contrast I have witness a some similarities which I believe Amherst College diversity has in their community. My experiences of community have made me socially perceptive. When I was younger my parents were part of a hispanic program while I assisted an american one. I went to the hispanic program as much as I could, but what I realized was the people attending settled in their own bubble and did not want to explore. Meanwhile, the people in the American program were more willing to try new activities

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I can see myself enriching the diversity of Boulder's community through usage of my bilingual education and comprehension of different cultures. Being Latino, I understand the Spanish language and Latin culture, something that is a big part of the nation's community. Through these capacities, I open a broader connection with the community. In understanding how to communicate with others of Latin origin, I can work with a wide group of students to solve a problem and answer the need for different thoughts, background, and experience. My hopes for my college experience are to earn a major, graduate summa cum laude, experience nature, acquire invaluable life experiences, and learn how to live more independently.…

Fall of 2013 I started the Early College Alliance, otherwise known as ECA. For those who do not know, when you first start ECA you take High School level classes, with other High Schoolers during your first semester. After teachers review your progress you’ll either be placed in College classes, because you’re what they call, “College Ready,” or you’ll take another semester of High School classes. During my second year of ECA, I was placed in EMU College classes. During this time I was exposed to an environment in which I was interacting with adults in a classroom setting, versus being in school with students in my age group.…

Affirmative Action—the consideration of race in college admissions—allows colleges to admit students based on their race to increase campus diversity, even if their academic standing is not as high as other students applying to the university. A common fallacy is that minorities are underrepresented in higher education, and while this may be historically accurate, there is a new group that is losing the benefits of higher education—lower class students. By extending more opportunities to these students, colleges can increase diversity on campus without considering race, and develop a wider range of backgrounds and experiences within their student body. It is time to end the affirmative action practice of taking race into the consideration of…
