Dedication takes up time, energy, and, perhaps most important, money from the athletes. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of professional is as follows: “a person competent or skilled in a particular activity” (Dictonary.com) These athletes have to be skilled in order to play in college. Since the athletes bring their own developed skill to their college, it should be the college’s duty to reward them for their actions in games or meets by payment. According to Tony Brony, “The NCAA states that student-athletes will not be paid for their talents because that would ruin their amateurism as student-athletes.” However, can we really consider these D1 athletes amateurs? Would you really call athletes such as Simone Biles, a 19-year-old gymnast, an amateur after she won five gold medals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio? I would think
