College Admissions Essay: Where Do I See Myself?

People always have trouble pinpointing where I was born. When I joined my new Macedonian elementary school in the fourth grade, most of my class assumed I had been born in Turkey. I had, after all, just moved to Skopje at the age of nine, having spent majority of my childhood in Ankara. I remember how hard it was to explain to my peers why I had lived there. I doubt I even understood it myself. My dad was simply relocated to Turkey as he had gotten a job there and we all went with him for four years. It seemed as natural as moving to the other end of town to live closer to school.
It certainly did not help my cause that, while in Turkey, virtually the only people I spoke Macedonian with were my parents. That left me with an in-depth knowledge of Macedonian 80s pop hits, not quite the understanding of how to communicate with kids my age. On the first day of class, I was asked to introduce myself by narrating my summer. Trying to talk about a bracelet I had gotten, I used the archaic word for “bracelet” which my father loved. Though my teacher appreciated the ornate phrasing, most of the kids just laughed. It was a while before I mastered the Macedonian vocabulary of my peers. For at least a year, I

Although moving to Turkey was not a choice I made, coming to Columbia was. Certainly, I wanted to be a part of a community of some of the best scientific minds in the world, but I also wanted to branch outside my national and ethnic bounds to craft my own story. Though I do miss my friends from home and make sure to spend at least part of each break in my native Skopje, I do not doubt my choice to continue my education on this side of the ocean. Because I want to spend the next decade of my life in a transcultural context within which I will join the international community of physician-scientists, I am applying to your

I was born in Miami, FL but my parents are from Venezuela, and I was raised in Canada and in the Bronx. Being raised in a completely different environment than I do now has taught me a lot and I’ve grown so much because of it. I had to quickly adapt to a different setting that I was not used to or ever experienced before. Coming to the United States at the age of eight years old was quite a difficult transition because I did not know any English and the culture and environment is different.…

As a child I can remember making lists of what I wanted to be or accomplish when I grew up. Then, the list probably consisted various items including becoming a pop star, owning 30 dogs and eating ice cream for breakfast. Now as a senior in High School, my list of goals has drastically changed and helped to guide me through the college process. Quickly, I realized that my goals parallel many of the Jesuit values that Georgetown University exemplifies. It was after two service trips to West Virginia, tutoring underprivileged children once a week, and being part of my school’s Community Service Corp’s that I realized just how integral a part of service is to who I am.…

Discuss an experience that sparked your interest in this field. I was a young freshman, wandering the halls of Cambridge High School attempting to find my classes without being late. During my freshman year, I was enrolled in a fascinating science class; biology. I became amazed at everything that I learned about and how every body system was so intricate in its functioning. I also loved how different levels of organization affect upper levels of the body system.…

Famous Social Activist Desmond Tutu, once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put all together that overwhelm the world.” In my experience, I have certainly found this to be true. Life is a blessing to me I am so lucky and privileged to be able to have an education, loving friends and family, and a place to call my home. Lately, through the stress of my junior year of high school, I have been forgetting to connect to my true self. Staying up late for assignments and keeping up with extracurriculars has made it difficult to remember some of the most important things in life.…

Moving back and forth between two different countries was confusing and made me incapable of grasping either language and develop it. I remember this one time. Middle school was really hard, especially keeping up in 7th grade. I remember watching a video about the labor movement. When the teacher asked a question, everyone was raising their hands, very excited to answer, as if they were in a competition and I was just there, sitting with my hands kept to myself.…

This world is so diverse as all people have their own story, that is composed of their own life. I personally think it is so amazing that we are all able to connect in different ways, no matter what our story is. As I am just heading into adulthood, with so much life ahead of me, yet I have experienced so much that has made me who I am. Over the years of my high school life I was never sure about many decisions I make. However, I’ve grown and learned to continue on a path that’s going to lead me somewhere I feel safe, empowered and successful. Going to college is something I’m sure about, but it’s hard to choose the best college that’s right for me. NYU is a university that I’ve always wanted to attend, ever since I started searching for colleges online. New York University is one of the well known college for visual and performing arts.…

Even though there are many things that make me who I am, only few help contribute to the fact that I am very persistent. The dictionary definition of persistent is as follows: continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. My obsessions, hobbies, characteristics, achievements, and aspirations help me to always remain persistent. To begin with, many of the things I love factor into my persistence. I enjoy reading, and have a tendency to easily obsess over new words, quotes, Nicolas Spark’s novels, and organized libraries.…

Success is defined as the attainment of popularity or profit. But how do you measure this “popularity” or “profit”? The reality is that you can’t measure success. It is merely a never-ending mirage that we Millennials are mistakenly chasing in order to fill the cracks and holes that make up our personality. We are choosing majors and jobs based on the income and social status rather than ones that we possess the passion and devotion for.…

As human beings we find ourselves living by the clock, planning our lives away. This causes us to forget that we cannot control everything that happens. Our lives can easily spiral away from those plans we once made. In middle school I created a blueprint for my life, one that I was so set on accomplishing. I learned, however, just as we all do, that blueprints are not always perfect and can be tossed to the side.…
