College Admissions Essay: My Vocabulary Debate Team

Improved Essays
Most high schoolers probably regret a number things: not asking out their crush, not going to enough school dances, or maybe not going to enough football games.
Strangely enough, I don’t regret any of those things; I regret not starting debate early enough.

In my short time with the debate team I was able to learn how to refine my vocabulary, my capacity to think well on my feet, and most importantly my ability to publically speak.
Each debate was an opportunity for me to engineering a round, winning line of argument, to improve a witty retort, and crafting poignant rebuttals. Before I saw the debate team, as just arguing for fun, but after one week of being on the debate team, I was able to see the many layers of rhetoric, logic, and drama.
I was hooked. I attended extra practices,

As I am rounding the corner on my final season and state tournament. I have started to miss the debate team. I stay longer in practice with my teammates, and at meets, I spend more free time interacting with debaters from rival schools. I have started to realize that I’m not going to miss winning trophies or recognitions. Or even miss being able to have more trophies over the mantle than my older brother. I am going to miss the debate community, and the environment I was blessed to be immersed in
The debate community is unlike no other. With the PolitcalAnimals and Model Legislature, I was surround by diverse perspectives, but they were people who were only really passionate about politics. Similarly, with student government, I was near people with a taste for leadership and public service. But debate surrounded me with people who were passionate about countless things. I was lucky to interact with debaters passionate about science, technology, politics, medicine, literature, and art. And above all, a profound appreciation of shared

In Deborah's Tannen’s essay Agonism in the Academy: Surviving the Argument Culture, Tannen asserts her belief that in order to create educational in depth debates, scholars must be able to converse with others, and build off of their peers ideas rather than denounce them. Tannen first declares this concept when she revisits a moment in her life when she attended an unsatisfying reading group. In this reading group, the scholars among her turned to the faults of the focus book’s genre, rather than the book itself. Due to this setting, Tannen was reminded of a term coined by Walter Ong: agonism. Tannen describes Ong’s term as “a debate in which the contestants are assigned opposing positions, and one party wins.…

A discourse community is something that I have been thankful to be apart of through out my high school career, and to this day. The Washington High School Soccer team all shares a common goal of wanting to win a West Virginia State Championship, and continue to be successful through out life, sharing means of communication through social media and email. During my upper classman of high school I got chance to be apart of family that was all held together by something that meant more than just a ball. My soccer team was a magnificent group of friends, and we are still very close thanks to this discourse community. Through the seasons and off seasons the team has never fallen apart and we still remember what made out team so good the chemistry.…

It seems as whenever there is a discussion, debate, or civic civil discourse in a room full of people, the room temperature is higher than normal. It is not any coincidence. The temperature rises because of disagreements between bantering groups of people. These days, it seems as if almost every debate or conversation getsgrows heated due to the inability or unwillingness of participants to work together, leading to arrogant guffawing and judging making the environment impotent in disagreements of opinions and reaching a common ground, let alone a resolution. One cannot just simply have a proper civic civil discourse.…

The Vice Presidential debate that occurred on October 4th 2016 was important to people across the united states. It is clear that many citizens are undecided on who to vote for, the point of this debate was to give clarity to voters and to reassure the American people of their views. I was hoping this debate would be better than the presidential debate however it seemed to be the same; Tim Kaine interrupting and Mike Pence constantly being on the defense. Despite the interruptions both candidates made a few good points that are essential to consider when making a decision. Both sides made strong arguments.…

In the book Everything’s An Argument written by Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz, a discourse community is defined as “a group of people who share common interests, goals, values, assumptions, knowledge of a topic… and discursive patterns.” In this paper, I’ll explain how I successfully became a member of my high school’s football team by building a strong relationship with my team mates, paying attention to detail, and going the extra mile throughout practice. I will also be able to carry out my explanation through the usage of ethos, logos and pathos appeals.…

On October 4th, the first and only vice presidential debate was scheduled to take place. Personally, I am not familiar with the role of the vice president other than to break ties in the senate. I didn’t have any idea what to expect from either of these candidates, other than to hear them defend the presidential candidates whom they will serve beneath. I predicted a stronger debate than the presidential debate and a win for the Democratic Party under Tim Kaine.…

For the last few weeks our class has been discussing what it means to be a discourse community as well as what it means to be a part of one. I am writing this paper to impart upon the fellow students in our class, as well our professor that I not only understand the meaning on a discourse community but that I also have been a full-fledged member of one myself. To further verify the extent of my membership I also am able to show the ethos, logos, and pathos that I encountered while within my discourse community over the past year. The discourse community in which I was a part of was show choir, the varsity choir at my high school. It was my junior year in high school when I decided that I wanted to join and at the time I did not know how to join and decided that I should I ask director how to do so.…
