After my teacher handed back my first test and I saw a huge “A” written on the top right corner in red ink, a grin crawled out of my mouth and onto my face. I couldn’t wait to go home and show my parents. When I handed my mom the test her jaw dropped, she stepped back and was astonished. Physics became something I wanted to do in my life, but what in physics did I want to do? There were so many choices, and countless routes. I have always enjoyed studying science, but physics did not mesh well with my mind. From the start, I knew this would be a difficult class, but I still promised myself I would work hard and get an A. Most of us want to be going downstream, to be caught in the tide of schooling and schedules and let it carry us to our next destination in life. I’m the same way. Why strive to forge your own path or struggle with new, uncharted territory when a clear path, a proven path, is right in front of your own eyes, waiting for you? During middle school, this was the prevailing philosophy; just ride the current. It wasn’t long until I realized a strategy of letting the river of others’ efforts carry me would not work, however.…
