High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

Freshman and sophomore year are years you feel like you are invincible and also have a hard headed mind set, especially when you’ve been in varsity sport since freshman year. None of those ways of thinking and feeling help you do well in school or distinguish the real important things from the not so important things. My summer of sophomore year I tore my ACL during a game for my club team. I, being this stubborn sixteen year old teenager thought I would recover from the injury quick and be that “stud” from freshman year but turned out way different than I planned. Laying on my bed not able to do a single exercise or touch a ball left to right, my thoughts started to become really dark thoughts.…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

As the end of my high school education draws near, I wonder if I am ready for the next step. Have I learned everything I need to know to be a successful adult? Looking back, school has been my life…and a pretty good life too. For the last twelve years, it has stretched and molded my mind and laid the foundation in preparation for the rigor of college and medical school. Though my formal education is invaluable, I would have to say, some of the greatest knowledge I have acquired did not come from a classroom but from a job and the events leading up to the job.…

Growing up in inner city Baltimore was not easy at all. I have seen so many horrifying things at such a young age. Countless times I have seen crackheads slumped over like zombies walking throughout the neighborhoods I called home. I have been to countless memorial services, vigils, and funerals for people who were senselessly murdered in the streets. I have even been grazed by a stray bullet during a routine drive-by while playing in my front yard.…

Three years elapsed, and with those years gone, so were my hardships. The start of my fourth year marked the turning point for me and what made my final year in high school a memorable one. Unlike the years prior where my opinion didn’t matter, my senior year was when I was finally recognized and praised for my abilities. I felt like I was an asset to the team rather than someone who was just taking up space. I was given first priority when the time had come to pick numbers.…
