College Admissions Essay: A Career As A Historian

Decent Essays
Becoming a historian or a writer would be silly since I am good at math and science and it’s something I like. Engineering would allow me to enjoy my work, which is important because, with any luck, I will be working for decades. I don’t want to have to drag myself out of bed every morning and do something I hate.
Solving problems and reaching goals gives me great satisfaction. I work better when I have something to work towards and a definite answer. Either my solution will work or it won’t. If it does work great, can I make it work any better? If it doesn’t work, why and what can I do to make it work? This is how I process problems and I think I will work well in as an engineer.
Engineering is also a good career choice because there is

I figured engineering would be a great career choice for me because some areas use creativity in one way or another, say if I want to be a civil engineer, then I would have to design objects before building them. It also uses the area of math and science, and I am a professional in those areas of study so it would be a job that won’t be as difficult, but still…

When people think of professional actors, they tend to think of romantic leading types. But I wouldn’t trade being a character actor for anything. I studied acting at Carnegie Mellon, and as graduation approached, I noticed that those of us who fell into the ‘character actor’ category were getting different words of wisdom than those who tended to play lead roles. For the leads, there was a lot of pressure to sign with a big agent and start working right away, because it’s all about youth and beauty. But it was almost the opposite for me.…

The medal hid under a stack of clothes inside my closet–a painful reminder of immoralities that I am capable in doing. Most people would always be jubilant when they hear they earned a prize, but instead, I just had my head down for the rest of the day, heavy with contempt. I could have went the right way, I was thinking. Each time I went out for the Writing Contest, I’ve always failed for the reason of my “stupid writing sense”, according to my lovable mom. But weeks before the 26th Emmy’s Fiction Writing Contest, I was just hit with a surge of imagination, to write something that I never even thought of before.…

What I discovered, in time, was that helping others is not just a fulfilling purpose, but a moral responsibility. Indeed, medicine is the most appropriate career path for me, the one best suited to me intellectually, emotionally, and otherwise. In my high school years, I worked at my local medical center, rotating among different departments including emergency, physical therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and radiology. Just as I sold popcorn for Boy Scouts and had to learn to deal with the public, within the office I also had to be diplomatic.…

I am not a journalist; I am a screenwriter, but like you, I have an affinity for writing because it is a fine art, like sculpting or painting. In college, I was a political science major, and I loved it because every course taught me something new and exciting about the structure of governments, the ideologies of foreign countries, or the norms and customs of any given culture. Whether I was documenting the plight of African American children in the South or the rise of the Islamic Republic in Iran, I enjoyed telling stories. I believe journalism requires first-rate storytelling ability, because if the truth is distorted so is the integrity of the journalist. Conveying emotions in an honest and creative manner is a special skill, and anybody who loves the craft of writing understands that cutting through the black and white, is what makes the relationship between author and reader so sacred.…

To major in history at Georgetown has been a goal of mine for years, since I started thing about college. As soon as I heard of Georgetown and began to research it, I instantly wanted to know more, feeling certain this was the place for me. I have loved history since I was eight years old and first picked up a biography of Elizabeth I. Hanging on every word, watching the long-lost world of Tudor England play out before me, I was hooked. Ever since then, any and all history classes became my favorite--I barely saw them as school, they were so enjoyable. My love of history has only grown over the years, as my classes have become more interesting and challenging, and I have now seen the subject in many different lights.…

Growing up, I had multiple teachers who inspired me to be a better student and immerse myself further in the English language and the historical background of our country. I was awed to learn the understanding of symbolism and irony, and taken aback by some of the horrific actions taken by Americans in the past. I have always been sure I would become a teacher after graduating high school, and I dreamed of writing novels and editing narratives at a renown publishing house. I wrote stories in my free time and participated in UIL Ready Writing throughout my time in elementary and middle school to achieve these goals. I dream of the day when I walk across the stage at the University of Texas at Austin with my diploma in hand, as a Cum Laude graduate.…

I feel the field of engineering is fundamental to the technological advancements as a society. The second and main reason I chose engineering as my career path is that ever since I was a young kid I was always fascinated with math and how things work using calculations.
