Collaborative Group Reflective Report

Before the collaborative group was established, I did a mini self-reflection where I focused on what skills would be good to make the project the best it can be. Skills that I deemed important included dedication to academics, passionate about theater, information on both the technical and performing side of the stage, creative thinking, and respective of other people’s ideas. Having a dedication to academics and passionate about theater will ensure that the members of the group would be dedicated to the project and will not get off task. Having knowledge about both the technical and acting side of theater will ensure that the group will be well versed on various aspects of theater including lighting, costuming, playwriting, and blocking. I bought to the table a comedy that plays with the traditional aspects of theater including breaking the fourth wall by audience participation. Another participant brought a comedy about the educational relationship between teachers and students, which would be relatable to the audience. The third person brought a radical and unbelievable comedy about buying a car and it all going wrong. None of these ideas resonated with us and we decided to start from scratch with a new idea. This is one of the benefits of working with a group because we were able to bounce ideas off of each other. We were able to categorize the good ideas from the bad ideas.
Since all of our main ideas were forms of comedy, the choice between a comedy sketch and a dramatic piece was simple. The question was now what type of comedy. We set out to do farce since two of the group members, including myself, have experience performing in a farce production. Even though some farce elements are visible in the piece, the work morphed into a parody, similar to what one could see on Saturday Night
