Some believe he dishonored those who have fought and died for the freedom America has today. However, Kaepernick’s actions were appropriate because he embarked a peaceful protest. Kaepernick kneeling was a respectful act that was done quietly and showed his right to freedom of speech. In the article Refusing to Stand for the National Anthem: Top 3 Pros and Cons it states, “A letter signed by 35 US veterans states that “Far from disrespecting our troops, there is no finer form of appreciation for our sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically exercise their freedom of speech.” (ProCon Page 3) This shows even military veterans respected Kaepernick’s protest. Therefore, the veterans are appreciative that their hard work in the military is being used to allow Kaepernick to take a stand for what he believes in. His protest is allowed because of the freedom the First Amendment provides. In that case in no way did Kaepernick break any laws. Other prominent NFL players have sat out or demonstrated during anthems.” (TRIB Page 2) Kaepernick took the first leap to protest for what he believed in. As a result his silent but visual protest action influenced others to follow his lead such as other football players. Kaepernick made a profound impact on others because he never directly told anyone to follow his lead. As a result other athletes got the courage to protest as well. As more people started to follow his lead the message Kaepernick was initially trying to spread got around more and talk about more. His actions bought racial injustice more in the public eye.
