By having the Premier say his opinion on the U.S’ actions, it was easy for people to be persuaded to his form of government. Both the Soviets and the United States tried to out the other countries’ ideas of government to make themselves look better. This was an example of an indirect way of fighting with one another. Another example of the Soviets and the United States fighting indirectly through competition is the development of nuclear weapons. Even though these weapons wouldn’t be used directly on each other, the race for development was a big enough fight. Another way the Soviet Union and the United States fought the Cold War was through other countries. One example of fighting through other countries is the Cuban Missile Crisis. In Document 8, President Kennedy gives a speech on the Cuban Missile Crisis and he says, “I call upon Chairman Khrushchev to halt and eliminate this secret and reckless threat to world peace.” President Kennedy is saying that the Soviets need to take their weapons out of Cuba before our world gets into extreme nuclear war with each other. This nuclear war would result in the destruction of all human life. President Kennedy wants the fighting to stop and the start of that is to stop using Cuba as a way of fighting with the United States indirectly. Soon after President Kennedy gives a speech, Premier Khrushchev responds, “ These weapons were only meant for defensive purposes. We have supplied them to prevent further aggression in Cuba… We have given the order to discontinue building the installations. We shall dismantle them and withdraw them to the Soviet Union.” (Document 9). The Premier is saying that his reason for installing the weapons in Cuba was to protect Cuba from the United States.
