Cold War Communism

The Cold War took place from the end of World War II, in 1945, to 1991, when the Soviet Union fell. It was a prolonged period of tension. The Cold War was not fought like any other war; it was fought through competitions such as the Space Race, Proxy Wars, and Sporting Events. The war was over the spread of communism, the idea the people in a country should share all the wealth and property. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism throughout the world, but the United States wanted to keep communism within the Russian borders. They wanted to contain it. Containment was the United States’ attempt to keep communism from spreading, and it was done by giving aid to West Germany and fighting for South Korea in the Korean War.

North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea who was supported by the United States, without warning. President Truman deploys United States troops to South Korea to fight the war, as he promised to help South Korea, “President Harry Truman, with the help of the United Nations, vows to defend democratic South Korea.” (DOC C) Truman did not want to help South Korea because North Korea would crush them otherwise, it was because if North Korea won, communism would have been spread to South Korea. In order to contain communism, Truman had to risk thousands of American lives. However that risk insignificant compared to the risk of communism spreading even more. By fighting the war, the United States was really fighting the spread of communism, which was the purpose of the policy of containment.
