In general, cold formed steel has many important properties which make it significant building material, the main two properties of cold formed steel are: the yield point and the tensile strength and how are they related to formability of steel, most members in building industry are on high tensile loads, cold formed steel has a Huge tensile strength, however the ratio between the tensile strength and the yield strength is 1.2-1.8 .in addition to other good qualities of cold formed steel such as, ductility, hardness, fire resistance , and weld-ability.
Stress - Strain Properties
The stress-strain graphs are one of the main important things related to the properties of steel, which can easily explain and describe …show more content…
on the other hand , the first curve is for annealed steel, where the yield point can be defined and it's the level at which the curve of stress-strain curve becomes horizontal.
The yield strength is improved due to the influence of cold formed of steel ( cold work done into strain-hardening range ).Cold formed steel has a yield stress value in rage of 33 Ksi and 80 Ksi, and the values of Modulus of Elasticity ( E ) are approximately 30,000 ksi ( 207 GPa ), these values are considered in the design process of cold-formed steel buildings by AISI specifications
Ductility Criteria
The definition of ductility is " an extent to which a material can sustain plastic deformation without rupture." in is very important to have a ductile steel because its needed in both forming process and plastic redistribution of stress ( mainly in members and connectors ).
According to a research study by Dhalla, winter and Errera at Cornell …show more content…
A number of pairs of rolls are the components of a typical roll former. Each pair of rolls which are rotating in the opposite direction changes the shape of the sheet once the sheet passes through the rolls. The complexity of the section determines the number of pairs required. Forming speeds vary between 20-40 meters per minute and that’s why it’s a rapid method. Computers hold control of the rolling machines and a flying shear cuts the sections to the exact length. Some less complex sections are being produced now using adaptable rollers but they are not structurally efficient as the dedicated rollers but they are more economical because it allows producing wider sections in less
