Colbert: An Argument Of American Culture

Improved Essays
The quote from Colbert is significant in this discussion because of how Americans have interpreted it. In other words, some have seen this quote to be a criticism to American-Christians. However, I am arguing that it is really an argument of American-culture. Yes, we are a Christian nation by the percent of the population identifying with Christianity, and the historical context of our religious origins. This is key in order to understand what is the causation for the selfishness of our country. Furthermore, there needs to be a recognition that social norms are the true variables: the corruption of capitalism, large banks, corporations, and the fast pace live style(s). The sources I have used backed the idea that this is a Christian nation

Socrates gave the philosophy of a democratic form of government to us, via Plato’s Republic. Aristotle, in the Rhetoric, taught us “the preservation of the city lies within its laws”.…

One of the most common misconceptions of Americanized Christianity is this Christianity is, itself the perfect model of Christianity. Our manifest struggles with the meaning of Christianity, and its application within our social structure has set to define the United States as a “Christian” nation – that is a nation founded and built upon a foundation of Christian principle. This misguided idea has lead many to defend a quasi-theocracy that was never intended to be the fundamental tenet of our national existence. Throughout United States history, this quasi-theocracy, built upon jaded interpretation of biblical text, doctrine and dogma has been employed to divide, conquer and oppress humans in conditions such as chattel slavery as well as…
