It is extremely different to learn about social work compared to putting it to practice. In my opinion, the practice is a lot more ingenious. The same method will not work for every client, and real-life experience in the field can also provide a lot of wisdom. At first I was kind of scared that I did not have enough competence about social work and its methods, and that would interfere with my ability to interact correctly with the kids. This fear was provoked mainly from hearing about cases in which, social workers have gotten in trouble with the law because their clients died. But, I have learned about myself that I usually am somewhat fearful of the unknown until I put my toes in the water. Every occupation has safety measures and rules. I was also not sure about working with children, but it wasn’t so bad. I am usually the kind of person that is very commanding, but also very laid back and silly. I realized that when working with children, they show more respect and affection when there is a balance in between. Kids have their pros and cons like any other group. I genuinely care about people, and I am thrilled with the idea that I will get paid for doing it (unless it is volunteering, which is also great). A social worker’s main battlefield is through organizations that work on tackling social issues with specific goals. Athens Area Homeless Shelter is a non-profit organization. They depend on free volunteer work to help their clients. Vice versa, volunteers benefit with knowledge about the organization’s mission, competence about the population, and a foot in the door for a job with the organization. Before being a social worker in
