Cochlear Implant Research Paper

Let me start by saying that I am extremely grateful that my mother did not force me to have the surgery for Cochlear Implant when I was young, then have to with its consequences both mentally and physically. I was deeply upset when the boy, I missed his name, had half of his mouth paralyzed because of the CI surgery he had which screwed with his brain. I can't imagine not being able to smile and people might be staring at me wondering why I don't smile and might be just a jerk or it could be that people might make fun of that too.

I've never seen the movie, Audism, and it was a truly eye-opening experience for me. The fact that deaf people thought it was just how it is, that's how I've always felt my whole life. The truth is that it's

Auguste Majkowski, a Canadian boy was born deaf and received a bilateral cochlear implant which failed to help him hear. A bilateral cochlear implant helps provide hearing in 360 degrees because your head acts as a barrier to sounds coming from different directions (Cochlear, n.d.). Thirty-six days after Auguste’s surgery, he lifted his head after audiologists Margaret Winter sent pulses of electric currents to his brain. Lifting his head showed that he heard a sound. This reaction was remarkable to the audiologists because Auguste was only 22 months old.…

The book “Deaf Like Me” by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley intrigued because it was about a hearing family that had a deaf daughter. I was also interested that the book was written in the perspective of the father. The statistic that vast majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents has always made me fascinated with what each hearing parent has done for their deaf child. I knew that this story would most likely have a happy ending considering the title “Deaf Like Me” I made the inference that maybe his daughter would find inclusion from being emerged in the culture of deaf individuals. “Deaf Like Me” followed the story of the parents Tom and Louise Spradley in the early 1960s.…

Deaf Since Birth: At first I was so confused when she said she was actually hoping for her kid to be Deaf, but the way she put it made perfect sense and definitely gave me a better understanding of what Deaf culture is. “When I think, I see ASL signs in my head.” was fascinating, and something I’d always been curious about. I loved how Michelle said her family treats being born deaf the same way anyone would regard being born with blonde hair or brown-eyes, and I wish all parents could be this accepting of their children being born different, whether deaf or otherwise. The fact that she said that if given the chance, she would rather not be able to hear surprised me, it was very thought provoking-…

The way Deaf people are presented in television and movies has a huge impact on the way hearing society perceives the Deaf community. The main character, Maddie, is a Deaf author who uses American Sign Language (ASL) as her primary mode of communication but is also capable of lip reading and writing in English.
