In the class reading “The Hold Life Has,” Catherine Allen talks about her life as an ethnographer living among indigenous peoples and discusses their culture and ways of life. A major aspect of the indigenous culture is the growth and usage of coca leaves. The leaves have been used in the Andes by the natives for generations. However, these leaves are unfortunately also used to create cocaine. With the United States’ “War on Drugs,” the coca leaves have become a source of contention between local governments, who see the leaves as a potential drug violence problem, and indigenous societies that see growing the leaves as a cultural right.…
ONE morning in the mid year of 1999, 47 individuals were captured in the Texas Panhandle town of Tulia and accused of managing cocaine. From the begin, the arraignments ought to have seemed suspicious. The majority of those captured were dark; in truth they spoke to one in each five dark grown-ups in Tulia. Is it safe to say that it was truly dependable that such a noteworthy extent of a little group were merchants? What's more, who were they managing to?…
The answer my question was written in an article by Kelly Hearn titled: “Argentine Slums Mired in New Drug Problem”. As defined in the article, cocaine - known as “Paco” on the streets of the slums where it is most often found - is the number one public enemy of Argentina. Mario, a factory owner interviewed by Hearn, says that they keep it in the trees (Hearn 1). Paco is cheap, which is why most of its buyers are residents of the slums. Addicts of Paco dwelling in the slums are nicknamed “Muertos Vivo”, which translates to the walking dead (Hearn 2).…
Cocaine: The Potent Powder “Use your head little soldier, keep the coke out your system...that won’t do away with the pain” (Master P). In the memoir, A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah, young Sierra Leonean soldiers, including the author himself, regularly abuse the stimulant cocaine for its crucial benefits on the merciless and demanding battlefield. Cocaine is “an addictive drug derived from coca or prepared synthetically” (Dictionary), producing a powerful high by acting on the brain, then traveling to the bloodstream and affecting the entire body (WebMD). Cocaine is a highly potent stimulant, yet continued to remain popular among soldiers due to its sought after gratifying short term effects, despite the dangerous long term effects…
Crack vs Powder Cocaine: Unjust Prison Sentences of Two Races For decades the United States has experienced an imbalance sentencing problem between African Americans and White Americans who use crack cocaine and powder cocaine respectively. Although both of these drugs are similar to one another, African Americans have been incarcerated more often than White Americans. According to the NAACP, from 1980 to 2008, the number of prisoners in America increased from about 500,000 to 2.3 million. Today, the US makes up about 5% of the world population and has almost 25% of the world prisoners (NAACP). Cocaine was founded thousands of years ago in the cocoa plant in South America which is then melted down to a solidified figure and then crushed down to a powdery crystallized substance. It is used recreationally across the globe by snorting it through the nose, smoking it through a pipe, or injecting it with a needle and is rarely used as an anesthetic in medicinal purposes. The drug travels all over the world to supply to many people but is illegal in many countries like the U.S., India, South Africa and Germany. The only countries they are legal is in Mexico and the Czech Republic. As the drug became more popular and well known, people started to make names for cocaine.…
“Then the Feds made distinctions between people who sold powder cocaine and crack cocaine — even though they were the same drug. Only difference is how you take it,” Jay Z says. “And even though white people used and sold crack more than black people, somehow it was black people who went to prison. The media ignored actual data. To this day, crack is still talked about as a black problem.”…

As the U.S. loses its hold of Latin America, new horizons emerge, and the possibility of legalizing narcotics may put Latin America in an advantageous position. The regional economic ties are increasing, as well as Latin America’s ties with the European Union and China, which have reduced the countries’ dependence on the U.S. (LeoGrande). The U.S.’s economic aid has largely been reduced, except for aid to the poorest countries or for the war on drugs, which has also diminished the U.S.’s control of the area, aided by the increasing political maturity of Latin America (LeoGrande). The U.S.’s power is still pushed through the war on drugs, however, the fact that Latin America is heading in the direction of legalization may take away the U.S.’s…

Often, media fails to display appropriate results of drug usage, other than the expected “high”. The media also glorified not only cocaine, but all narcotic trafficking to a level of prestige. Interestingly enough, as stated above, the media in a symbolic way, showed both positive and negative reinforcement with the involvement of cocaine trafficking. Unfortunately, in American Gangster, the movie failed to show the negative effects of cocaine manufacturing processing, usage, and trafficking. In order for responsible consumption of cocaine, one must conduct research of potency of cocaine, how it is manufactured, the difference between powdered and crack cocaine, and it’s processing speed in the body depending on the type of consumption.…
