How I define leadership is a unification of several different personal beliefs. Every person in the Coast Guard is different with their own personal value’s, backgrounds, cultures and belief system forms who we are today. We are all different in many ways, but what bring us all together are our Coast Guard organizational core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty. From the beginning of my Coast Guard career, one of my first values that I carried with me into the organization was to put forth 100 percent of my efforts to the forefront of everything I do. As I moved along my professional years and grew up to be a young man, I have learned that in order to succeed in this organization is to understand that life is not just about myself but that it takes a shared vision moreover developing a sense of communion within the organization. Developing relationships were a bit of a challenge for myself since how I happened to be raised in the inner city and being careful of my surroundings was a normal struggle for myself back then. As we all do in life, we live and we grow; we develop new belief systems in order to adjust to newer life challenges and how to succeed in today’s times. I was fortunate enough to have two Senior Chief Storekeepers Career Development Advisors at my unit who I respected for they took the time to lead me by setting the example, communicated areas of growth personally and professionally with honesty and with a sense of firm but fair brotherly love which I needed during which time. Both Senior Chiefs helped me tremendously and also gave me the insight and were a great example of how I would like to see myself to be in the
