Coast Guard Leadership Philosophy Analysis

Leadership represents an essential role in today’s Coast Guard. Necessary to the success of the service, exceptional leaders encompass many roles but they have the ability to maintain a philosophy that bolsters the work force at all levels. They balance the needs of the service with the needs of those under their charge by following excellent examples of compassion, advocacy, mentorship and duty. No one is born a leader; it is something that is learned and earned. Everyone has experienced good and bad leadership, but it’s the successful ones that extract those positive examples and incorporate them into their personal leadership style. Leadership is the ability to encourage, incite and inspire positive action. This is a broad and simple definition, as leadership is a difficult word to define. If a child was asked this question, they would probably look to positive role models, someone who is calm under pressure or those who they may want to emulate. However, all can agree that a good leader is someone that everyone is willing to follow. It is important for leaders to have a mental note of their leadership philosophy. Everyone is looking to them for answers and whether the decision was good or bad, they own it. Leaders don’t blame others for their failures but instead own the decision that was made, learn from its failures and improve upon the processes that attributed to the failure. They also understand that success is not a solo action, but that of a team effort. When the team achieves success, it isn’t just the leader that succeeded but everyone involved. Leaders are humbled by their position power and entrust those within the team to put every effort forward, even if they fail.
