Clover Patch Farm Observation Report

Decent Essays
On October 13, 2015 as a class we traveled to Clover Patch Farm near Millersburg, OH. Allen Kozak and his wife operate 420 milking cows and 800 head total farm. They do have a follow CNMP, but are required no permits. Allen operates a compositing bedding pack that consist of manure and sawdust. The way it works is that they have four foot walls to contain the composting area. They always leave about a foot left in the area so the cows do not have a far step from the alleyway. They layer the sawdust up to every other day and after sometime the area starts composting on its own. Allen said the level the manure was at has stayed the same for a couple months now. They use a cultivator hooked to the tractor to cultivate eight inches of the manure.

Kenneth Jackson contends in Crabgrass Frontier, that the development of the skyscraper with the telephone and elevator emphasized the vigor of the American city in the 19th century, “but the extraordinary prosperity and vitality of most urban cores between 1890 and 1950 cannot be understood without reference to the streetcar systems.” Unlike cable cars or the railroad, streetcars highlighted the business district and connected the people to the heart of the city. The streetcar enabled mobilization so people had more choices about where to live which triggered growth outside of the city. Jackson further illustrates this point stating, “the tracks radiated out from the center like spokes on a wheel, tying residential areas far distant to the…

In Farm Shares Offer Local Produce Without the Labor by April Crehan, it is known that New England is not the best land to farm because of the winter. Among the most important agricultural developments was the heavy wheeled plow, which could cut open the sod and aerate the soil, leaving behind a deep furrow in which to plant cereal crops (Course Document 78). This new technology was expensive, however, made largely from metal, and since few individual peasant families could afford the equipment, oxen, and skilled manpower required to tend their fields, agricultural cooperatives were formed (Course Document 78). Initially settled in patterns of relatively isolated manors, peasant collaboration prompted settlement into closer communities, and cooperation became a necessity for the protection and well-being of the entire field. Farming policies needed to be uniform to prevent the ruin of crops for each family that had strip holdings in the open field; planting and harvesting decisions were therefore made by the community as a whole, and the…

Understanding and Rethinking the American Lawn “I mow my own lawn”-Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan. If a former U.S President, who was a huge advocate for family values, took the time to maintain their own lawn, then we know that the “American Lawn” must have some sort of value to American Society. The growth of upland cotton was previously encouraged in Arizona by successive federal farm bills which administered subsidies to farmers per pound of upland cotton produced. For example, provisions of the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 entitled farmers to a direct payment of $0.0667 per pound of upland cotton produced as well as counter-cyclical payments if the effective price for upland cotton fell below the $0.7125 per pound target price for the produce and a marketing assistance loan of up to $0.52 per pound. Following the settlement of a World Trade Organization dispute between Brazil and the United States in 2009, the practice of administering direct subsidies to cotton farmers was found to be inconsistent with the terms…
