Annotated Bibliography: Decreasing the risk of Clostridium Difficile (CDIFF)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015) Clostridium difficile Infection http://www.cdc.gov/HAI/organisms/cdiff/Cdiff_infect.html
This particular site by the CDC summarizes all the Healthcare-associated Infections (HAIs), the organism that cause the disease and its data and statistics. Then it breaks down each infection one by one with an easy to read fact sheet. This is a great resource that merely summarizes each infections transmission, ways to treat the infections and is a good resource on prevention. This will be a great resource because it not only shows how CDIFF affects patients; it summarizes all (HAIs). It is a great source to compare (HAIs) as well. Possible inadequacy could be the fact that the CDC placed so many different infections on one side which could cause individuals to become overwhelmed while trying to obtain information.

difficile) What is Clostridium difficile (C. difficile)? http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/cdiff-eng.php
This resource by the Public Health Agency in Canada, describes what CDIFF is (an infection that causes diarrhea and colitis), how individuals get CDIFF, the signs of symptoms of it, and how the use of antibiotics contributes to causing CDIFF. This is a good reliable source because it shows that other countries along with the US are on one accord in the treatment and prevention of CDIFF. This is a great resource because it is showing that other countries are monitoring and prevent CDIFF and other infections as well.

Tetanus is caused by the Clostridium tetani bacterium. Clostridium tetani spores are able to survive for a long time outside of the body. They are most commonly found in animal manure and contaminated soil, but may exist virtually anywhere. When Clostridium tetani enter the body, they multiply rapidly and release tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin. When tetanospasmin enters the bloodstream, it rapidly spreads around the body, causing tetanus symptoms.…

Patients with this disease have symptoms such as watery diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, and abdominal pain. Usually, people who are at increased risk for C. diff had gastrointestinal surgery, or is living at an advanced age. Clostridium difficile basically is a bacteria that causes an infection to the colon that occurs especially among seniors who are in healthcare institutions such as nursing homes or hospitals (CDC, 2015). Gas gangrene belongs to the genus Clostridium (Carlisle 2014). It’s a non-motile, gram-positive, anaerobic, and spore-forming bacillus (Carlisle 2014). The most common etiologic agent that causes gas gangrene is called Clostridium perfringes. This can enter your body through open wounds and eating poorly cooked meat. Since C. perfringes is an anaerobic bacterium, it uses energy by using anaerobic respiration and Nitrate as an electron acceptor.…

While studying the different solutions to curing the Clostridium difficile infection, doctors were able to find a way to change poop, of healthy people, into pills. Using these pills, Doctor Thomas Louie created a one-time treatment, personalized for each patient. In this method, the stool from a donor is first processed in a lab-to separate the food and extract the bacteria to clean it-and then to pack the product into small triple-coated gel capsules. In order to prevent any smells from releasing the body, the capsules are made to remain intact as they exceed past the stomach before dissolving. Days in advance to the treatment, the patients must ingest an antibiotic that kills off the C-diff, but as the medication starts,…

Article Review Clostridium difficile is a bacterial organism that can be found in a small percentage of individuals alongside the natural flora of the digestive system; it produces spores, which can live for long periods of time outside of the body and due to their nature are excreted within fecal matter (Kenneley, 2013, pp. 63). According to Irena Kenneley in the article "Clostridium difficile infection is on the rise", C. difficile is increasing in frequency among individual populations which were previously considered to be low risk for contracting this infection. It is also believed that the current strain of C. difficile is far more deadly and resistant to many antibiotics that are usually used in the treatment of the infection. In…

difficile infections cause such a burden on the healthcare system, there have been various studies on the dynamics of this infection to help determine potential therapeutic strategies. C. difficile is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium (Koenigsknecht et al., 2015). It is transmitted among humans through fecal-oral route and can survive in aerobic conditions, because it spreads by spores that are resistant to heat, acid and antibiotics. Nevertheless, symptoms of the disease will not be present in all individuals infected with C. difficile, because colonization is often prevented by barrier properties of the gastrointestinal microbiota. Weakening of this resistance due to antibiotics, advanced age, and being immunocompromised often leads to pathogenesis of a C. difficile infection (Leffler and Lamont,…

Prior treatment of antibiotic resistance, history of foreign travel, and an increase exposure to raw milk, poultry and farm animals will be a risk factors for c. jejuni infection and antibiotic resistant infections. Aim 3: Determine if multidrug resistant phenotypes confer phenotypic advantages for c. jejuni, which would be associated with virulence characteristics such as, transmission, presentence, and…

Clostridium tetani is a bacillus, or rod-shaped bacteria responsible for the often-fatal disease tetanus. The word tetanus originated from the Greek word tetanos, which means to ‘stretch’. It is a Gram-positive bacterium and often appears to be shaped like a tennis racket, drumstick, or club when stained. This unusual appearance is the result of sporulation that occurs within the cell. C. tetani is an obligate anaerobe and relies solely on fermentation.…
