Clinical Reflection

Decent Essays
As I was going to clinicals today, I felt less nervous and felt more calm than usual. I was on Med-surg today and I got to see several different things. I was able to feel and listen to a bruit. The patient was going through dialysis at that moment, so I got to see that as well. I had never seen that and I thought it was pretty interesting.
When I went to do my assessment on the patient who had a stroke, I found her with her hands in a tile over her head. She was diaphoretic and couldn’t tolerate her pain. She said she was waiting on her pain medications, but the nurse never administered them to her because she had to go to a meeting. I felt this patient should have been the main priority for the nurse.

Reflection Paper The experience with the standardized patient at Mercer University on March 4, 2016 was a great visualization of the skills learned during spring and previous semesters. Calmness sheltered the encounter more than the previous experience, with greater confidence in performing the assessment and communicating with the patient. The nurse personally reviewed the patient but no proper documentation of her observations even though there was no improvement in vital signs [Conyard, 2015]. This clearly breach standard 1.6 of NMBA standard of practice as documentation defined by Barnett, Treas, and Wilkinson (2016) as a legal evidence where legal experts will examine if a dispute about client care arises such as interventions were timely and appropriate and a tool for communication between the multidisciplinary team about the patient’s status and…

The initial response to this scenario is to feel compassion for this patient that has been cared for, for so long and to solve this problem for him. However, it is important to remember the role of the nurse. It is not the role of the nurse to make decisions for or solve problems for our patients. It is our role to provide all information about their health and health care needs, and to remember how our patients choose to proceed is their decision and their journey.…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

This essay is a reflection on my anticipated health care practice. It was required that I choose a group that was effected by the diversity of ethnicities, religions, genders, sexualities and abilities in the Australian population. I chose to do a mental disability, which was dementia. Four components will be addressed into this essay; the barriers to health care access and good care, my attitude, values and beliefs towards those with dementia, culturally safe health care practices that I might undertake with Individuals with dementia, and how I, as a health care provider could advocate for people with dementia at a population level. I noticed that people with dementia suffer from multiple barriers to health care access and good care.…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

If we were too aggressive with treating her pain, we could’ve caused hemodynamic instability which could lead to other serious complications. Nursing judgement plays an important role in many of the decisions a nurse has to make daily. It is not just about unquestioningly following doctors’ orders. Nurses have to decide when the doctors’ orders make sense and when it does not before implementing it. In this regard, I have a lot of respect for the ICU nurses I have worked with because I saw how they question the legitimacy of orders and act to correct when those orders needed…

Today I would like to reflect on my first client experience in therapy and how it has helped me to discover my standpoint for the profession. At the beginning of the semester I came to the realization that I need to go to see a counselor – I wanted to become more aware of myself, to experience the process from a client’s perspective, and to sort out some stuff that bothered me unconsciously for a couple of years. Our theory class helped me a lot with realizing whom I want to see; however, since we have learned only half of the theories and I was not certain if I make the right choice. I knew that I existential, Adlerian or Freudian approaches would not be the best option for me, as what I have learned about those theories did not amplify the…

Reflecting on the materials covered thus far in this course, I have learned and gained tremendous insight of the field of counseling psychology. One of my favorite aspects of the course was learning about the history of counseling psychology, specifically the difference between counseling and clinical psychology. Prior to the course, I was not very cognizant of the difference between the two fields. I assumed the main difference between counseling and clinical psychology was clinical psychology focuses more on diagnosing and treating patients with mental illness and disorders.…
