Global sea levels have risen over the 20th century and will continue to rise through the 21st century and beyond sue to global warming. It is predicted that the sea level will continue to rise by up to 60cm by 2100 in response to ocean temperature rising and glacier and ice caps melting. There are two main factors that lead to global warming, firstly thermal expansion of seawater and secondly water mas input from land ice melting. Ocean temperature data collected has shown a significant increase during the second half of the 20th century. Thermal expansion accounts for 25% of the observed sea level rise since 1969 and 50% from 1993 to 2003. The worlds glaciers have been shrinking at a frightening rate which has seen all 19 glacier regions of the world shrinking; this fast increase in melting has caused an increase in the amount of water flowing into the ocean causing the sea level to rise. The most iconic glaciers are disappearing faster the most. Between 2003 and 2009 ice has been lost at a rate of 259 billion plus or minus 28 billion tonnes per year. This increase is enough to raise the sea level by about 0.7mm per year. These extreme sea level events cause both social and economical impact on low-lying coastal communities, which often result in the loss of lives and numerous property damage. Many of the words largest and most iconic cities are situated in close proximity of the ocean and …show more content…
There are many people who believe that climate change isn’t occurring. In order to make this assumption you need to look at all the evidence that supports climate change and the evidence that does not. There are many long-term effects that are going to occur due to climate change. If the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas levels continue to increase in concentration at the rate they are at the moment, it is going to continue to cause an increase in temperature which is also going to lead to an increase in ocean temperatures causing loss of many ecosystems that are not adapted to this sort of change. Increase in sea levels is going to cause devastation for coastal cities and cause millions of people to have to re-locate. More intense and frequent weather events are going to lead to more devastation along with loss of homes and lives for many people. In order to convince a denialist the climate change is occurring, the facts need to be presented to them so that they have the opportunity to understand all the evidence before choosing there position on the
