I too have similar concerns about a client misinterpreting me, especially in the forensic setting where a client could easily become upset or violent because of it. As Danielle discussed, communication will be the crucial to make sure you and the client are at a mutual understanding. It is also highly important to always be mindful of your client and what they are trying to communicate to you through both verbal and non-verbal interactions. Clinical Interviewing (2015) also discusses facilitative skills such as content reflection and feelings reflection. Reflection skills are used by restating the essence of the subject matter (content reflection) or the client’s emotions (feelings reflection), in order to facilitate responses and/or discussion.
