Clien Counselors: Multifaceted Therapeutic Relationship

Counselors understand assessments as only one component and resource of the multifaceted therapeutic relationship and do not solely rely on assessments to provide appropriate services. Counselors may use assessments to narrow, specify, and address client concerns, keeping in mind the therapeutic relationship is inherently collaborative. Counselors promote the wellbeing of the client by utilizing appropriate career, educational, psychological, and career assessments in the context of clients’ situations (ACA, 2014; AMHCA, 2015). assessments may be formal and quantitative, as is in the case of written and scored assessments, or informal and qualitative, as in the case of intentional listening and clinical judgment (CRCC, 2017). Counselors are responsible for the accurate and appropriate scoring of assessments and formation of services dictated necessary. Counselors avoid the use of outdated and obsolete assessments and only use current and up-to-date assessments that are empirically support. If empirical support is lacking, counselors will interpret results with caution (ACA, 2014; APA, 2017). When selecting assessments, counselors will consider the clients age, culture, race and ethnicity, disability, gender, language, religion or spirituality, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status to select the appropriate assessment in context of such factors (AMHCA, 2015). Counselors provide assessments in clients’ preferred language whenever possible. When not possible, counselors consider the role of language when scoring the assessment (APA, 2017). Counselors do not misuse results of assessments and make efforts to prevent others from misusing information (ACA, 2014).
