In Syria, Cleopatra, who was twenty one years old, built an army containing mercenaries and Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was a well known military leader. According to Encyclopedia of World Biography, “Julius Caesar had returned to Alexandria after the Battle of Pharsalus, she saw the opportunity to use him. She had herself smuggled to him in a rug.” Along with Julius Caesar has her ally, Cleopatra’s army consisted of one legion, known as Legio VI Ferrata. Ptolemy XIII and the sibling’s younger sister Arsinoe IV, had 20,000 soldiers and 2,000 horses. The war ended in 47 BCE with Cleopatra’s victory. Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile River after being forced to leave Alexandria by Cleopatra. The throne was passed down to Cleopatra’s younger brother Ptolemy XIV where he and Cleopatra co-ruled Egypt together. Ptolemy XIV, Cleopatra, and Caesarion, Cleopatra and Julius Caesar’s son, went to Rome. While in Rome, Julius Caesar was granted dictatorship for ten years. Julius Caesar was going to marry Cleopatra, which the people of Rome did not approve. According to wikipedia.com, in Rome, it was illegal to marry foreigners. Before they could ever marry, Julius Caesar was murdered by the Roman Senate because they were worried he was trying to get to much power. He was stabbed multiple times.
