As I am someone that has no interest in mountain climbing, Kevin Macdonald’s interpretation of Joe Simpson and Simon Yates’s intrepid journey, ‘Touching the Void’, is a powerful film that is sure to turn heads and has definitely made me reconsider spending time mountain climbing. This docudrama follows a tragic incident that results in one man’s fight for survival after Joe and Simon’s descent up the unclimbed Peruvian Andes and ends with the audience questioning what they would do. To achieve this, Macdonald has turned the friend's story into a gripping and captivating film, by taking the climbers back to the mountain on which they almost lost their lives. When we first meet Simpson he comes across as blunt and brutally honest. His attitude and honesty then leads him to a slow reduction before reaching breaking point, where he must…

In Walt Whitman’s poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” we are connected to the author or rather the narrator in a way different than many other works we come across. Whitman uses second-person narration, in which the narrator talks directly to the person reading the story. The first line, “Flood-tide below me! I see you face to face!”, introduces us, expeditiously, to second person narrative. This narrative is described simply as “a narrative mode in which the protagonist or other main character is referred to by second-person personal pronouns”.…
