In these small groups, students take turns sharing how that interpreted what they read in class. The goal was to help the students learn how to correctly write words and pronounce words with short vowel sounds. They used letter tiles to individually create words that contained the /ur/ sound. First, the teacher should maximize the structure in the classroom. That is to ensure that the class is not congested and that the students have free space for seating and movement. The students worked on several tasks during this video and the classroom would have been ideal for learning/work stations. Secondly, the teacher should spend some time posting, teaching, reviewing, monitoring as well as reinforcing classroom expectations. Students should know the goals and objective at the beginning of any class which was not evident in this video. It would also help to increase student engagement through more small group discussions and formative assessments during instruction since many of the students were learning material that they didn’t understand before class started. The did engage students in a review of the concept at the end of the lesson, but often times waiting to the end to identify students’ understanding of a lesson can create issues as there is no time to go back and find where the student is having trouble. Finally, the teacher should incorporate more strategies used to reinforce appropriate behavior and to respond to inappropriate behavior.
